Finding an adoption agency: What to look for

Some adoption agencies are more reputable than others. Some agencies specialize in adopting orphans from specific countries. Some are more expensive than others.

Questions to ask of potential agencies:

Find an agency that is COA-accredited: Agencies that have this accreditation have been reviewed and have been found to meet national standards.

Agency education and preparation: Does the agency prepare parents for adoption issues, such as cultural issues, post-placement attachment, and expected and potential medical and behavioral issues?  Does the agency provide post-placement support?

Ask for a clear breakdown of fees: What services do the fees cover and have they told you about all adoption related costs?

Agency and staff experience: How long has the agency been in business and how long have they completed adoptions in your country of interest?  Don't assume every reputable agency has competent caseworkers. Find out what kind of experience the caseworkers have and ask for referrals. Will your potential caseworkers have current knowledge of your particular state requirements and of immigration requirements and documents? Do the caseworkers assist parents in completing required documents and submitting them by deadlines? How many cases have they completed for your country of interest?
